The West Sacramento Fire Department has the mission of protecting life, environment, and property within the City of West Sacramento. To effectively complete this mission, the Department has located five fire stations throughout the City. The five fire stations operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with a combined staffing of 17 personnel on duty which includes a Battalion Chief to respond to all structure fires and other major emergencies providing Incident Command and Scene Management. Firefighters work 48-hour tours of duty. There are three work groups called "shifts." In addition to the City of West Sacramento, the Fire Department is responsible for the unincorporated area south of the city boundary to Babel Slough Road and across to the old Arcade Station on Jefferson Blvd. The Fire Department has Automatic Aid agreements with several Yolo County Fire Departments, and with the City of Sacramento Fire Department. The Fire Department has three divisions, which provide a wide range of services for the community. These divisions are: Fire Administration, Emergency Operations, and Fire Prevention/Hazardous Materials.

ISO Class 1 Department

ISO stands for Insurance Services Office. This is a group of trained, professional evaluators that evaluate municipal fire protection efforts in communities throughout the United States. Points for everything from training, water supply systems, emergency dispatch capabilities, apparatus, call volume, response times and more are thoroughly assessed and rated. The audits which determine the ratings occur every five years. ISO analyzes the relevant data using the Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS). The purpose of ISO is to give insurance companies a uniform system on which to base their insurance premiums. By classifying a community’s ability to suppress fires, ISO also helps the community evaluate their public fire protection services. The final rating ranges from Class 1 (superior fire protection) to 10 (minimal fire protection). Historically, very few cities receive the coveted “Class 1” rating. Of the nearly 50,000 rated cities across the United States, less than one half of 1% of cities receive a “Class 1” rating. During its 2016 audit, the City of West Sacramento received a “Class 1” rating. A “Class 1A” was also awarded to the rural area, which is the highest rural rating available. As insurance companies typically utilize the classification to assist in determining premiums, the new classification has the potential for financial savings for homeowners and business owners alike.

Youth Firesetter Program Academy

During the week of March 11^th, Firefighter Brashear participated in a Youth Firesetter Academy, as an instructor, in partnership with the Firefighters Burn Institute. These academies are an important service for our community to help youth firesetters and their families received the help they need through education, diversion, assessment, and psychological services to prevent future fires, injuries, and arson crimes.

 Residential Fire

On Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 8:14pm, WSFD crews responded to reports of a house fire on the 1800 block of Michigan Boulevard. Upon arrival, the first due engine observed smoke coming from the garage and attic and made entry through the front door with hose lines.  Crews confirmed a working fire inside the garage, and quickly accessed it and began extinguishment.  Subsequent arriving crews checked for fire extension into the attic and performed salvage operations to protect the contents of the home from smoke and water damage.  Crews confirmed all occupants were out of the house safely and there were no injuries.  The fire is currently under investigation.

Vehicle accident

March 6, fire crews responded to eastbound Interstate 80 near Enterprise for reports of a vehicle accident with multiple vehicles involved. West Sacramento Fire crews arrived on scene and found a multi-vehicle accident with the driver of one of the vehicles entrapped with serious injuries. West Sacramento Fire Truck 45 and Engine 43 crews worked quickly to access the patient, administer patient care, and extricate the driver of the vehicle who was transported by AMR to a local hospital with serious injuries.  

 Residential Fire

On the morning of March 4, fire crews were dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 400 block of Walnut Street. Crews arrived on scene and found two separate cottage-type units on the property on fire.  Crews made an aggressive attack on both fires and were able to hold the fire to the two involved units. These units and the surrounding units were searched for victims. Crews were able to confirm everyone made it out before our arrival. There were multiple adults displaced by the fire and the Red Cross was contacted to assist in helping the fire victims.  There were no injuries, and the fire is currently under investigation.

Probationary Firefighter Evaluations

Over the past few weeks, the West Sacramento Fire Department's two newest firefighters completed their second of three, hands-on evolution evaluations. These evaluations take place at 4-, 6-, and 12-month intervals. The test ensures our firefighters are meeting expectations throughout their probation. Both firefighters performed very well and are performing as expected at this point in their 12-month probation. Congratulations!

Vehicle Accident

In the early morning hours of Sunday, March 3, fire crews responded to Eastbound Highway 50, east of Harbor Boulevard, for a multiple-vehicle accident with reports of a pedestrian that was hit. Crews arrived on scene to find multiple vehicles stopped and people walking around on the highway. One vehicle was overturned with one patient in critical condition laying in the roadway. Fire crews assisted AMR with patient care and the patient was transported code three to the hospital. Truck 45 and the Battalion Chief remained on scene, blocking all lanes of Highway 50, so crews could clean up the scene with tow trucks and the CHP.  

Residential Fire

On Sunday, March 3, fire crews responded to a first-alarm residential structure fire in the 1900 block of Maryland Avenue. Fire crews arrived to find heavy smoke and fire showing from the roof in the back of the house. Crews made entry through the front door with hose lines, determined the fire was in the attic and began pulling down the ceiling to make accesses to extinguish the fire, with crews simultaneously working on salvage operations. The fire was extinguished, and all occupants were confirmed to have made it out of the house safely with no injuries. Fire crews helped the displaced occupants connect with the Red Cross for assistance.

Read Across America

On Friday, March 1^st, the WSFD was happy to assist Stonegate Elementary School with their annual Read Across America day for 2024. T45 made an appearance at the elementary school, along with other volunteers,  and participated in reading multiple Dr. Seuss books to the students and answered questions about the career of firefighting. The WSFD is honored to be invited to participate in this annual Read Across America day each year.
